Edo Kiriko Whisky Glass by Junichi Nabetani - Chrysanthemum in Abundance 大菊 (Blue)
Nabetani Glass Crafts(鍋谷グラス工芸社)
Founded in 1949 in Tokyo’s Ota Ward, Nabetani Glass Crafts is a multi-generational glass studio specializing in Edo Kiriko, Japan’s traditional cut glass.
Now led by Junichi Nabetani (鍋谷 淳一), the third-generation artisan and a certified Traditional Craftsman (伝統工芸士), the studio combines century-old techniques with modern sensibilities, creating pieces that balance precision, depth, and expression. Nabetani’s works are known for their bold cuts, rich layering of colors, and the signature interplay of light that Edo Kiriko is celebrated for.
The legacy began with the founder’s dedication to glass artistry, was elevated by the refined skill of the second generation, Satoshi Nabetani (鍋谷 聰), and continues today with Junichi Nabetani and the fourth generation, Kaito Nabetani (鍋谷 海斗), working side by side.
Each piece is handcrafted using high-quality crystal—often sourced from Kagami (カガミクリスタル) or Fukagawa Glass (深川硝子工芸) — and undergoes meticulous cutting, polishing, and inspection. Through their work, Nabetani Glass Crafts preserves the elegance of Edo Kiriko while pushing the boundaries of contemporary glass design.
Edo Kiriko (江戸切子)
Edo Kiriko, Japan’s exquisite cut glass craft, dates back to 1834 (Tenpo 5), when Kaga-ya Kyubei, a glass merchant in Edo’s Odenmacho district, first engraved patterns onto glass using emery.
During the Meiji era, as Western knowledge spread, Edo glassmaking merged with European cut glass techniques, shaping the Edo Kiriko we cherish today. This craft is now officially recognized as a Traditional Craft by Japan’s Minister of Economy, Trade, and Industry.
Precision Cutting & Luminous Luster
Authenticity in Edo Kiriko lies in the details. True craftsmanship is revealed through razor-sharp edges, intricate patterns, and a breathtaking luster—achieved only through expert hand-polishing. Each piece reflects the artisan’s dedication, skill, and deep-rooted passion for the craft.
