"Tsubasa" 翼 - Wings

With piercing eyes and unwavering presence, Tsubasa (翼) captures the spirit of a hawk—sharp, composed, and powerful. This Edo Kiriko whisky glass, handcrafted by master artisan Junichi Nabetani, is a rare expression of representational beauty in a craft traditionally rooted in geometric abstraction.

Animal motifs are seldom seen in Edo Kiriko. The challenge lies not only in the hardness of the crystal glass, but in conveying life, movement, and character through layers of precise cuts. Tsubasa pushes the boundaries of this tradition, presenting a hawk’s intense gaze and curved beak in stunning clarity and balance.

Viewed from the back, five circular facets have been meticulously carved into the glass. Each one reveals the hawk’s face in full—symmetrical, expressive, and unmistakably alive. This multi-angle design invites quiet contemplation: how a single subject can be seen in many ways, yet remain true in every form.

Tsubasa is more than a vessel. It is a work of discipline and vision, where mastery meets imagination. Whether used or displayed, it speaks to those who value strength in stillness, and elegance with intent.

Nabetani Glass and Junichi Nabetani 鍋谷 淳一

Founded in 1949, Nabetani Glass Crafts is a long-standing Edo Kiriko workshop located in Ōta Ward, Tokyo. Now led by third-generation craftsman Junichi Nabetani, the studio continues to uphold the traditional techniques of Edo Kiriko while embracing a refined and evolving design sensibility.

After first pursuing a career in the computer industry, Junichi later joined Kagami Crystal in 1992, one of Japan’s most respected glassmakers, to train in the art of glass cutting. He returned to the family workshop in 1995 and was certified as a Traditional Craftsman in 2009 by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.

Junichi Nabetani’s works are distinguished by their deep respect for classic Edo Kiriko patterns, often incorporating motifs such as chrysanthemums and octagonal baskets with exceptional precision. Yet within this tradition, his designs also exhibit a quiet modernity—marked by delicate balance, symmetry, and light-reflective brilliance. His attention to depth, clarity, and harmony reveals a nuanced understanding of how light interacts with cut glass.

As both a craftsman and a creator, Nabetani continues to explore the timeless beauty of Edo Kiriko, offering pieces that are not only technically masterful but emotionally resonant—glassware that brings both elegance and spirit to the everyday.

Edo Kiriko (江戸切子)

Edo Kiriko, Japan’s exquisite cut glass craft, dates back to 1834 (Tenpo 5), when Kaga-ya Kyubei, a glass merchant in Edo’s Odenmacho district, first engraved patterns onto glass using emery.

During the Meiji era, as Western knowledge spread, Edo glassmaking merged with European cut glass techniques, shaping the Edo Kiriko we cherish today. This craft is now officially recognized as a Traditional Craft by Japan’s Minister of Economy, Trade, and Industry.

Precision Cutting & Luminous Luster

Authenticity in Edo Kiriko lies in the details. True craftsmanship is revealed through razor-sharp edges, intricate patterns, and a breathtaking luster—achieved only through expert hand-polishing. Each piece reflects the artisan’s dedication, skill, and deep-rooted passion for the craft.
