Created by Kyoto ceramic artist Daisuke Hashimoto 橋本大輔, this Hyoen Tenmoku cup captures the quiet drama of fire and ice within a single vessel.
The term Tenmoku refers to a high-iron glaze that first appeared in China during the Song dynasty and was later embraced by Kyoto potters. Through precise firing and subtle control of oxygen inside the kiln, the glaze transforms—revealing natural yohen effects, delicate oil spots, and shifting reflections of light.
In this work, Hashimoto’s signature Hyoen (ice and flame) glaze dances between cool blues and warm amber tones, evoking both stillness and motion. The result is a surface alive with depth and quiet radiance—an expression of nature’s beauty shaped by fire.
Even those unfamiliar with the tea world are drawn to its mysterious glow, a reminder that true craftsmanship speaks directly to the heart.
