Japanese Clay Pot (Do Nabe, どなべ)

A staple in Japanese households and professional kitchens, the Do Nabe (土鍋) is an essential cooking vessel renowned for its exceptional heat retention and ability to enhance natural flavors. Originating from Iga Province, Japan, these earthenware pots are crafted from special porous clay, known for its high-heat resistance and slow, even heat distribution. Similar to a slow cooker, the Do Nabe gradually builds heat, then retains it efficiently, making it perfect for hot pots, soups, stews, rice dishes, shabu-shabu, and sukiyaki.

Every Japanese kitchen is said to have at least one Do Nabe, cherished not only for its functionality but also for the communal dining experience it creates. Placed on a portable burner, it becomes an instant centerpiece for group meals. With its rustic charm and subtle earthy aroma, the Do Nabe brings warmth and authenticity to every dish, making it an indispensable tool for those who appreciate traditional Japanese cooking.

Note

  • The clay pot can be used in a microwave or oven.
  • DO NOT store leftover food in the clay pot. Transfer it to a separate container for storage.
  • Allow the clay pot to cool completely before washing to prevent cracking.
  • Clean the clay pot with warm water and a soft sponge. A small amount of gentle soap can be used, but ensure it is thoroughly rinsed immediately.
  • Avoid soaking the clay pot during washing. Since it absorbs water, insufficient drying may result in mold, stains, or odors.
  • The clay pot is NOT dishwasher-safe.
