Two Tone Sake Cup - Jewel

Inspired by the vibrant sparkle of jewels, this sake cup features a beautiful gradient and contrast created by a two-tone color overlay, with intricate cutting that enhances its luminous appearance. The design motif is "stars", with two stars overlapping, their glow shimmering like tiny stars scattered across the surface.

The delicate chrysanthemum pattern, reminiscent of small twinkling stars, adds a touch of elegance. Additionally, the arched cuts on the sides create a stunning, teardrop-like three-dimensional effect, further enhancing the jewel-like beauty of the glass.

Satsuma Kiriko (薩摩切子)

Satsuma Kiriko is a prestigious form of cut crystal glass, originally crafted under Shimadzu Nariakira, the 28th head of the Shimadzu family. It is distinguished by its rich color gradation, achieved by layering vibrant colored glass over clear crystal and delicately cutting intricate patterns. This technique allows light to refract beautifully, creating a soft, melting transition between colors—a hallmark of Satsuma Kiriko’s elegance.

Production ceased after Nariakira’s passing and the Anglo-Satsuma War (1863) and Satsuma Rebellion (1877), leading to the loss of its techniques. Over a century later, Kagoshima Prefecture and Shimadzu Ltd. revived this lost art, and by 1989, Satsuma Kiriko was recognized as a Traditional Cultural Craft Product (伝統工芸品). Today, innovations like the Nishiki-e series (二重被せ錦絵シリーズ), featuring dual-layered color gradation and Edo-style patterns, further enrich its legacy as an enduring representation of luxury and craftsmanship.
