This is a ninja tanuki statue, the large size in yellow, a raccoon dog figure in the Shigaraki pottery tradition.
In Japanese tradition the tanuki is a lucky charm, said to bring luck with money, good luck and luck in competition, which is why these turn up as housewarming and opening gifts. This one is the ninja take on the form.
It is Shigaraki ware, from Shigaraki-cho in Koka City, Shiga: one of Japan's six oldest kiln sites, worked in a local clay rich in feldspar and quartz that takes on scarlet hi-iro fire marks and a natural glaze as it fires.
It belongs to a family of the same figure in other sizes and colours; this piece stands nearly twenty-five centimetres tall in yellow. It is handmade, so no two land the same, and arrives in a Hechimon paper gift box. As a display piece it asks for nothing beyond a dry dust.
