About Iga-ware (伊賀焼)
Born from the ancient kilns of Mie Prefecture, Iga-ware is one of Japan’s most storied and distinctive ceramic traditions. Crafted from highly porous clay found only in the Iga region—once the bed of a prehistoric lake—this pottery is renowned for its exceptional heat resistance, durability, and striking natural textures.
Iga-ware stands apart through its expressive surface details: spontaneous scorch marks left by open flame, subtle cracks known as kannyu, and the glassy green glaze (biidoro) that emerges unpredictably when ash melts in the kiln. These are not flaws, but signatures of its authenticity—each piece a one-of-a-kind result of fire, earth, and chance.
Historically favored by tea masters and now beloved by chefs and collectors alike, Iga-ware continues to embody the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi—an appreciation for imperfection, transience, and the quiet beauty found in nature and age.
