Toa Glass and Satoshi Nabetani 鍋谷 聰

Toa Glass Crafts, an Edo Kiriko workshop founded in 1960, began as a cutting factory specializing in whiskey bottles. Over the years, it has trained over 200 artisans and shifted to Edo Kiriko production. The workshop is now led by a father-son team: the father, a Tokyo Meister recognized by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, and his son, a master craftsman dedicated to traditional craftsmanship. They focus on contract processing, made-to-order production, and original designs.

Satoshi Nabetani, a traditional craftsman, is known for his focus on "transparency and light." His designs feature vessels made from transparent colored glass, with large areas of clear glass carved out, reflecting his belief that the beauty of Edo Kiriko lies in its light interplay.

The artisans' attention to detail in selecting vessels for transparency and light diffusion continues to reveal the evolving charm of Edo Kiriko, changing with how light interacts with its surfaces.

Edo Kiriko (江戸切子)

Edo Kiriko, Japan’s exquisite cut glass craft, dates back to 1834 (Tenpō 5), when Kaga-ya Kyūbei, a glass merchant in Edo’s Ōdenmachō district, first engraved patterns onto glass using emery.

During the Meiji era, as Western knowledge spread, Edo glassmaking merged with European cut glass techniques, shaping the Edo Kiriko we cherish today. This craft is now officially recognized as a Traditional Craft by Japan’s Minister of Economy, Trade, and Industry.

Precision Cutting & Luminous Luster

Authenticity in Edo Kiriko lies in the details. True craftsmanship is revealed through razor-sharp edges, intricate patterns, and a breathtaking luster—achieved only through expert hand-polishing. Each piece reflects the artisan’s dedication, skill, and deep-rooted passion for the craft.

Care & Use

  • Not microwave-safe and should not be exposed to open flames.
  • Made of non-tempered glass and not heat-resistant.
  • To prevent damage, avoid sudden temperature changes and strong impacts.
  • Glass can be easily scratched, so handle with care and keep it away from other glassware or hard surfaces.
  • Hand wash gently using a soft sponge and mild detergent. For cut surfaces, use a bundle brush for thorough cleaning.

Note

Small air bubbles, slight colour variations, and differences in thickness are inherent in handmade glass, reflecting its unique character and artisanal craftsmanship. Please consider this characteristic before purchasing.
