Old Fashioned Glass Peacock Classical Class by Tatsuya Nemoto - Gold Red
Old Fashioned Glass Peacock Classical Class 孔雀
The “Peacock Classical Class” old fashioned glass by master artisan Tatsuya Nemoto is a rare example of traditional cut glass elevated to fine art.
Crafted in Tokyo using time-honored techniques, this piece is distinguished not only by its crisp, geometric patterns, but by the incredibly detailed depiction of a peacock in full plumage—a motif rarely attempted in cut glass due to its complexity. Unlike repetitive patterns, animal figures require a deep understanding of proportion, movement, and texture, all translated through precise hand-cut lines on a curved surface. The slightest imbalance can distort the entire image, making this an extraordinary achievement in Edo Kiriko.
Nemoto’s work captures the grace of the peacock—its body etched in elegant contour on one side, and its tail feathers unfurling in harmonious symmetry across the glass. The brilliance of the cuts and clarity of the crystal give the piece a quiet radiance that shifts with every angle.
Whether held in the hand or admired in a collection, this glass speaks to a reverence for craftsmanship and form. A timeless piece that brings the spirit of traditional Japanese artistry into everyday life.
Nemoto Glass Company (根本硝子工芸)
Most finishing polishes focus on efficiency and minimizing effort. However, 根本幸雄 (Yukio Nemoto), the previous generation, devoted countless hours to hand-polishing, producing glass of exceptional clarity and beauty.
His philosophy—"Never cutting corners means never betraying the trust of our customers"—was always prioritized over profit or efficiency.
This unwavering dedication has been passed down through three generations: from 根本幸雄 (Yukio Nemoto) – the first generation, to his son, 根本達也 (Tatsuya Nemoto) – the second generation, and to his grandson, 根本幸昇 (Kosho Nemoto) – the third generation, preserving and advancing the Edo Kiriko tradition.
Founded by 根本幸雄 (Yukio Nemoto), Nemoto Glass Craft has become a distinguished Edo Kiriko workshop, known for its masterful hand-polishing techniques. This commitment to excellence endures, preserving the timeless beauty of Edo Kiriko.
Edo Kiriko (江戸切子)
Edo Kiriko, Japan’s exquisite cut glass craft, dates back to 1834 (Tenpō 5), when Kaga-ya Kyūbei, a glass merchant in Edo’s Ōdenmachō district, first engraved patterns onto glass using emery.
During the Meiji era, as Western knowledge spread, Edo glassmaking merged with European cut glass techniques, shaping the Edo Kiriko we cherish today. This craft is now officially recognized as a Traditional Craft by Japan’s Minister of Economy, Trade, and Industry.
Precision Cutting & Luminous Luster
Authenticity in Edo Kiriko lies in the details. True craftsmanship is revealed through razor-sharp edges, intricate patterns, and a breathtaking luster—achieved only through expert hand-polishing. Each piece reflects the artisan’s dedication, skill, and deep-rooted passion for the craft.
Kinaka 金赤 (Gold-Red)
Kinaka, a radiant gold-red color, is one of Edo Kiriko’s most revered and difficult hues to create. Achieving this striking shade is a mark of true mastery, requiring expertise and an unwavering commitment to perfection.
From precise material blending to careful kiln control, every step demands patience and skill. The brilliance of Kinaka is not just a color—it embodies generations of dedication and craftsmanship.
