This is an Arita-ware small dish from the Taseigama kiln, shaped around the ume mizuhiki knot motif, sized for condiments, small sides, wasabi, and life as a chopstick or spoon rest.
The mizuhiki knot is a symbol of good fortune and connection, which is why dishes like this end up as housewarming gifts. Arita ware, from Saga Prefecture in Kyushu, is one of Japan's oldest porcelain traditions, begun in the early 17th century and once exported to Europe under the name Imari. The glossy refined finish is the house style.
