Edo Kiriko Whisky Glass by Junichi Nabetani - Morpho Butterfly 艶舞 (Pink & Yellow)
"Enbu" (艶舞) – Morpho Butterfly
Inspired by a fleeting childhood encounter with a Morpho butterfly in a museum, Enbu (艶舞) embodies grace in motion. In this Edo Kiriko whisky glass by master artisan Junichi Nabetani, two butterflies are brought to life—one on each side of the glass—positioned in quiet balance, as if midair in a gentle, wordless dance.
Animal motifs are exceptionally rare in Edo Kiriko, a tradition rooted in geometry and abstract form. To carve such delicate creatures in crystal glass—capturing the curve of their wings, the symmetry of their posture, and the spirit of their flight—requires extraordinary skill, control, and creative sensitivity. This piece is a testament to that mastery.
The glass is crafted from a thick crystal blank, giving it a substantial weight and a sturdy feel. Though the surface is entirely hand-cut, the design remains remarkably delicate. The interplay of line, space, and repetition achieves a visual rhythm that is intricate but never overwhelming. When filled with whisky, the butterflies take on new depth—the golden hues of the liquid refracting through their wings, enhancing the feeling of movement and life.
One of the glass’s most subtle yet enchanting details lies just above each butterfly: a circular facet, perfectly placed. When viewed through one, the opposite butterfly comes into focus—its form fully framed and clear, like a living image held within glass.
Enbu is not just an object of beauty—it is a celebration of movement, memory, and meticulous craftsmanship. Whether collected, gifted, or used in moments of quiet ceremony, it invites reflection with every glance and every pour.
Nabetani Glass and Junichi Nabetani 鍋谷 淳一
Founded in 1949, Nabetani Glass Crafts is a long-standing Edo Kiriko workshop located in Ōta Ward, Tokyo. Now led by third-generation craftsman Junichi Nabetani, the studio continues to uphold the traditional techniques of Edo Kiriko while embracing a refined and evolving design sensibility.
After first pursuing a career in the computer industry, Junichi later joined Kagami Crystal in 1992, one of Japan’s most respected glassmakers, to train in the art of glass cutting. He returned to the family workshop in 1995 and was certified as a Traditional Craftsman in 2009 by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.
Junichi Nabetani’s works are distinguished by their deep respect for classic Edo Kiriko patterns, often incorporating motifs such as chrysanthemums and octagonal baskets with exceptional precision. Yet within this tradition, his designs also exhibit a quiet modernity—marked by delicate balance, symmetry, and light-reflective brilliance. His attention to depth, clarity, and harmony reveals a nuanced understanding of how light interacts with cut glass.
As both a craftsman and a creator, Nabetani continues to explore the timeless beauty of Edo Kiriko, offering pieces that are not only technically masterful but emotionally resonant—glassware that brings both elegance and spirit to the everyday.
Edo Kiriko (江戸切子)
Edo Kiriko, Japan’s exquisite cut glass craft, dates back to 1834 (Tenpo 5), when Kaga-ya Kyubei, a glass merchant in Edo’s Odenmacho district, first engraved patterns onto glass using emery.
During the Meiji era, as Western knowledge spread, Edo glassmaking merged with European cut glass techniques, shaping the Edo Kiriko we cherish today. This craft is now officially recognized as a Traditional Craft by Japan’s Minister of Economy, Trade, and Industry.
Precision Cutting & Luminous Luster
Authenticity in Edo Kiriko lies in the details. True craftsmanship is revealed through razor-sharp edges, intricate patterns, and a breathtaking luster—achieved only through expert hand-polishing. Each piece reflects the artisan’s dedication, skill, and deep-rooted passion for the craft.
Kinaka 金赤 (Gold-Red)
Kinaka, a radiant gold-red color, is one of Edo Kiriko’s most revered and difficult hues to create. Achieving this striking shade is a mark of true mastery, requiring expertise and an unwavering commitment to perfection.
From precise material blending to careful kiln control, every step demands patience and skill. The brilliance of Kinaka is not just a color—it embodies generations of dedication and craftsmanship.
