This is a red carp flag chopstick rest made by Sohō Kiln in Gifu, shaped after the koi streamers flown at Children's Day.

The listing explains the symbol: the red koi stands for strength, courage and good fortune, and the piece carries Sohō-gama's blend of playful form and rustic ceramic work. Each one is handmade, with variations in shape and glaze, and it works as much as a seasonal display piece as a table accessory. Made in Japan.

The maker says it is dishwasher safe.

Most of our products are handmade in Japan, and sometimes the one that you receive maybe slightly different to the photo. This is very common and in no way it will affect the performance of the product.
