What is a hashioki for?

A chopstick rest, called hashioki in Japanese, lifts the tips of your chopsticks off the table between mouthfuls, so you are not resting food-touched ends on the surface you eat from. The habit traces back to small unglazed earthenware pieces used during the Heian period, which is a very old habit for such a small object. Some sources also call it a hashi-makura, a chopstick pillow, which is a fair description of what it does.

What materials do ours come in?

Most of ours are ceramic and hand painted, made by several different small potteries rather than one house. Mino-ware supplies a handful of shapes, floral patterns and a cherry blossom design among them. Shigaraki contributes a set of puppy figures fired in the same wood kiln that marks the studio's other pieces with fire scorch and a natural ash glaze. Kakuni's lion-dog rest is shaped as a komainu, the temple-guardian figure. It doubles as a fridge magnet if you stick one to the back. Tamaki's design pairs a gold ichimatsu lattice with a crane. Away from ceramic entirely, Nousaku casts two tin designs: a raicho thunderbird pair in silver and gold tin, plus a medetai fortune-fish pair in tin and brass.

What do the motifs mean?

Chopstick rests carry more decoration than the chopsticks they sit beside, and a lot of that comes down to seasonal and symbolic motifs rather than a blank shape. Rests are designed with patterns that often reflect the seasons or a festive occasion, which is part of why the range spans so many small figures and patterns rather than one plain design. The crane, used on both the Tamaki and the Mino-ware pair, stands for long life and good fortune in Japanese design generally. Tamaki's own listing describes its gold ichimatsu lattice as a pattern of harmony, prosperity and continuity. Nousaku's raicho, the thunderbird, and medetai, a name that plays on the word for something worth celebrating, are named for what they represent rather than picked at random.

Do all rests get the same care?

No, and the split follows the material rather than the shape. Our cherry blossom rest from Mino-ware is the exception on our shelf: the maker lists it as dishwasher safe and microwave safe. Every other ceramic rest we carry, including the floral, crane and puppy designs, is better hand washed, since a painted glaze holds its colour longer without a dishwasher's heat and detergent working on it repeatedly. The two Nousaku tin pairs want their own routine again: hand wash only, no dishwasher, kept away from a microwave.
