This is a Haku sake cup cut with the Kaika, blooming, pattern in red.
Kaika means blooming, and the cutting is built to be read from more than one side: a fine chrysanthemum-link pattern runs against bolder, sweeping cuts, and from above the two together open out like a flower catching light. The base is cut wide enough to keep the cup steady.
Haku is a Tokyo Edo Kiriko house that favours deep, confident cuts with plenty of colour left standing around them. It's sized for sake, and its shape favours a steady grip from the base rather than the rim.
Wash it by hand in warm water with a soft sponge, never a scourer, and give it two rinses so no soap film dulls the cut. Keep it out of the dishwasher and away from sudden changes in temperature.
