This is a cat statue in the Shigaraki tradition, a small handmade figure for a shelf or a windowsill.

It is Shigaraki ware, from Shigaraki-cho in Koka City, Shiga: one of Japan's six oldest kiln sites, worked in a local clay rich in feldspar and quartz that takes on scarlet hi-iro fire marks and a natural glaze as it fires.

The piece belongs to the Hechimon line, a Shigaraki name for things that feel unusual or unique, made by craftspeople who accept the imperfections in the clay rather than correcting them.

It measures roughly six centimetres wide, six and a half long and seven and a half high, is handmade so no two land the same, and arrives in a Hechimon paper gift box. As a display piece it asks for nothing beyond a dry dust.

Most of our products are handmade in Japan, and sometimes the one that you receive maybe slightly different to the photo. This is very common and in no way it will affect the performance of the product.
