This is a Shigaraki-ware cup and saucer set from Hechimon in the Cherry design, a three-hundred-and-sixty-millilitre mug with its matching saucer.
The listing carries the Shigaraki story in full: the ware comes from Shigaraki-cho in Koka City, Shiga Prefecture, counts among Japan's six old kilns with a history it puts at over twelve hundred years, and is known for rustic, fire-resistant stoneware whose feldspar- and quartz-rich clay takes hi-iro scarlet fire marks and natural ash glaze in the firing. Hechimon is explained as an old Shigaraki term for something wonderfully odd. Each cup is handmade and differs slightly in size, shape and colour.
