This is a Shigaraki-ware cup and saucer in blue, a four-hundred-millilitre mug from the Hechimon line with its matching saucer.

The listing carries the Shigaraki story in full: the ware comes from Shigaraki-cho in Koka City, Shiga Prefecture, counts among Japan's six old kilns with a history it puts at over twelve hundred years, and is known for rustic, fire-resistant stoneware. Its clay is rich in feldspar and quartz, and the firing leaves hi-iro scarlet fire marks and shizen-yu natural ash glaze on the surface. Hechimon, the name behind the line, is explained as an old Shigaraki term for something wonderfully odd, and the pieces are made to keep their individual quirks.

The maker says the set is dishwasher safe and microwave safe, and that each handcrafted piece varies slightly.

Most of our products are handmade in Japan, and sometimes the one that you receive maybe slightly different to the photo. This is very common and in no way it will affect the performance of the product.
